FAQs

Can I get free trees?

Planting is occurring only in certain areas.  Check the online planting zone maps in your city, and then call your local forester to determine if you are in the zone or not.

Why is there a planting zone?

Planting trees in cities is crucial for improving air quality, reducing urban heat, managing stormwater, supporting biodiversity, enhancing aesthetics, promoting health and well-being, and strengthening economic prosperity.  The zones ensure a concentration of trees, across areas most in need, to achieve the 5 trees per acre planting density.

Are the trees really free?

Yes, you just need to agree to water the trees for two years.

What’s the process?

What kinds of trees are available?

There are over 40 different types of trees available.  Shade trees are the priority of this program, with limited evergreens.  Species change every season, based on nursery availability, and substitutions may be necessary.  Talk with your local forester to learn more.

Do you plant native trees?

Yes, the GGCP plants both native trees and trees from similar climates and hardiness zones that are adapted to tolerate the urban environment.  Not all native trees are suitable for planting in urban areas.

Do you plant fruit trees?

The GGCP is tasked with creating an overstory of new canopy in cities, through the planting of shade trees.  Fruit trees are typically managed to encourage fruit production, which incorporates pruning practices which run counter to the development of overstory canopy, so unfortunately they do not fit into the long term planting goals of this program.

Do you plant shrubs or flowers?

No, just trees.

How many trees can I get?

Professional urban foresters will meet with you on site to determine by the principles of “Right Tree, Right Place” the number of trees that will reasonably fit on the planting location.

Do you remove old trees?

No. If you have a dead or dying tree that is scheduled to come down, please contact the GGCP after the process is complete.  Old stumps or roots may also impede the tree planting process.

I work during the day, when do you do site visits?

Our operational hours are from 7:30am-4:00pm, but foresters can schedule some visits in the early evenings as well. You do not have to be home for the actual tree planting.

I don’t think I have enough space for trees, do I?

We have trees of all shapes and sizes, and more often than not can find a species that will fit in your yard. Give us a call and schedule a visit! You’d be surprised to see what we can plant in your city.

I don’t own the home, can I still get a tree?

Yes, as long as we have the homeowner’s written permission, we can plant for you. Call a forester to find out more, they can provide you with information to give to your landlord about the program.

Are you hiring?

Yes.  GGCP is a local employment program, which teaches green industry skills to local residents.  Visit MassCareers online to look for job opportunities in your area:
